Aussie Wedding Invitation

We're going "green," so here's your official invitation! (RSVP below)

Please join us on January 2nd, 2010

Ceremony on McKenzie's Beach at 6pm
Barbecue Celebration to follow at 57 Illabunda Drive
Malua Bay, NSW, Australia
Attire: Beach Formal

How Do I Get There:

The best way to reach Malua Bay is via car. The nearest major town is Bateman's Bay (about 15 minutes drive north of Malua Bay), and the nearest regional airport is at Moruya (20 minutes south of Malua Bay).

McKenzie's Beach, the location of the ceremony is at the southern most end of Malua Bay. Heading south on George Bass Drive from Bateman's Bay, you will need to pass Malua Bay Beach (on your left), ascend up a hill, and as you descend you will see a beach in front of you, on your left hand-side - this is McKenzie's Beach. Parking may be a little tricky since the beach parking lot is rather small. However, you can park along the road, but please be careful when walking to the beach.

Once you walk past the parking area, take an immediate left when you hit the top of the sand dune - the ceremony will be on the grassy area overlooking the beach.

Barbeque Celebration:

After the short ceremony we will be heading to Geoff & Kathy's Malua Bay beach house at 57 Illabunda Drive. To get to the house, just head back up the hill (towards Malua Bay Beach), and take the first right at the top of the hill. 57 Illabunda Drive is approximately 300m on your left.

Accommodation:

Since this is a small gathering we're suggesting that people contact us directly at mm [at] 2earley [dot] com to discuss your situation. We realize this is late notice for some of you, and so would like to assist you in finding a place to stay. For those of you who don't mind crashing on the floor, there is plenty of room at the Malua Bay Beach House. However, if you prefer to leave a little early from the BBQ and head back to Canberra (or somewhere else), then please do, we certainly won't be offended. Either way, please email us to let us know if you're planning to stay the night in the area.

What to Bring:

Please, no presents. If you would like to make a contribution to help us furnish our new home in Washington DC, we would be very grateful (feel free to tell us what you would like us to enjoy with your gift). However, we have very full suitcases already, and the logistics of traveling back to the US with presents in tow is somewhat daunting.

Please bring your favorite music or ipod playlist to help us enjoy the evening barbeque!

New House!

We're in the process of moving to a lovely row house in Glover Park. It's a great neighborhood, just a mile north of Georgetown. Our house is 80+ years old with a bit of charm and work to be done, but eventually, we'll get settled. :)

Registry

Thanks to those who have asked where we are registered. We've recently purchased a house, and we're overwhelmed with stuff still packed away in boxes. We're missing some larger items, like couches and a guest bedroom set, and we would be very grateful for contributions towards those items, or anything else of your choosing (feel free to specify what you'd like us to enjoy with your gift).

We can also use gift certificates to Target, Lowes, or Amazon.

How to plan a wedding in less than a month

Thank you to everyone who helped! I don't recommend ever trying to plan an event like this in under a month, but should you ever find yourself in the situation, I can recommend:

Plus...
  • 300+ photos shot over the course of 4 years
  • 1 minute of trans-pacific video shot over the course of 4 hours
  • One 75-year-old wedding band, and another wedding band from a nameless jewelry store who has trouble fed-ex-ing things on time!
  • One interview with the Australian Ambassador (good on ya, cobber!)
  • Spence on hd flip video camera
  • Dress alterations in 48 hours
  • Vows and a Judge

14 June 2009

After Party

We'll be heading out to Bar Dupont at the Dupont Hotel after dinner on June 19th - around 10:30 PM. The Dupont Hotel is located 2 blocks east of the Cosmos Club (walk over on Q Street towards Connecticut Avenue to 19th and Q; your car can remain in the Cosmos lot). We hope you can join us!

"The newly-refurbished Dupont Hotel houses the Bar Dupont: Intimate, unexpected and unashamedly chic, the cocktail bar redefines lounge style for the Dupont Circle set. Custom-designed leather furnishings, modern artworks and rich, dark textures create a seductive atmosphere within the hotel in which to enjoy lunch or dinner, a glass of wine or a colourful cocktail with friends."

... Sounds almost too chic for me, but I'll be at my maximum chic that night, so why not?! ;-)

Registry

Many of you have asked where we are registered...

We are bursting at the seams of our tiny barely-700-square-foot apartment. We are saving to purchase a house with more space. If you would like to contribute to our home purchase or honeymoon travels instead of purchasing something from our registry, we would be very grateful! Feel free to suggest what you’d like us to enjoy with your gift (a massage on the beach in the Maldives would be great :)! ... As would a cappuccino machine or new bedding for a future house).

We've had very little time to create a registry, but we can always use gift certificates from Amazon.com or Macys. Again, please suggest how you'd like us to use your gift.

We are also registered at:

We will try to add more registry items in the coming months. We really don't expect gifts, but if you feel compelled, perhaps you'd like to wait until our Australia wedding (Jan '10) or check back on on our 1 year anniversary ... when you plan your own wedding in less than a month, you simply don't have time to create an extensive registry with things you actually want!

The greatest gift we can give Marty for his birthday is an amazing son-in-law: the son he never had! The son-in-law who will be cheerfully available from now on to move heavy furniture, lift boxes, and provide an additional much-needed Y chromosome to the family mix. Therefore, please, no birthday gifts.

    Engagement Story: The Set-Up

    The Premise:

Catch the express train to New York City for the weekend to visit my cousin.

…and now, what really happened… [skip straight to the actual proposal]

    The Train:

Clear instructions to MLA required her to be at Union Station at 5:15 PM, plenty of time to catch the 6PM train. Or so I thought. At 5:30PM, M sent me a text message saying she was running late but on the Metro. Already furious and panicking that all my weekend plans were about to go up in the smoke, I waited patiently for her to arrive. It must have been 5:50PM when M finally emerged. Not knowing what it was like to catch an Amtrak train, I was surprised to see M sprinting to the other end of the platform. I quickly lost her. Minutes later, I somehow managed to find her in the business class cabin about to settle in (M later told me that seats are not allocated so you need to be ‘strategic’ when boarding). M, preparing herself for the 2.5 hour express journey to NYC, took off her shoes, wrapped herself up in the travel blanket, turned on her ipod and donned her eye mask. M was settled and at peace with the world. We were on our way to NYC. Or so she thought!

As we were traveling through the underground tunnels towards Baltimore, I realized that perhaps it was time to let M know that I had ulterior plans for the weekend. To broach the subject, I first had to wake up her from her self-induced coma. I tapped her on the shoulders and said “Sweetie, I have to tell you something.” Upon her waking, I continued, “I know you hate surprises but we have to get off the train now at Baltimore.” Now, for those of you that really know M you’ll also know that she hates surprises. Her reaction at this point in time had the potential to ruin the entire weekend. I was nervous. However, and to my surprise, M was a good sport and went along with the plan, packed up her stuff, and left the train as quickly as she had boarded. I, however, unaware that Amtrak trains don’t stop for long, (my first time on a train in the US!), was still collecting the luggage from the overhead cabin as M was waiting on the platform, urging me to hurry up. Fortunately, I managed to get my act together (and all our stuff off the train) and didn’t leave M on the platform by herself (though that would have been funny…for 5 seconds or so).

    The Taxi:

As we taxied to the harbor front, M started asking questions on the destination: “Are we going to see Megan?” … “Are we going to a fancy place for dinner?” And finally: “If so, I’m not wearing the right shoes…” M was now frantically changing out of her Crocs and into her heels, which conveniently happened to be in her handbag (I still don’t know why…I guess it’s a girl thing to carry a backup pair of shoes at all times in case of emergency).

    The Marina:
** Before I continue, it’s good to have an appreciation of the weather that day. A freakish cold system was pelting the East Coast that week, and today was no exception. Winds were gusting up to 40mph and there were thunderstorms around the area all day. You can probably imagine my anxiousness throughout the day.**

As we proceeded to walk out onto the heliport it was clear that the plan was to take flight on one of the helicopters perched on a skinny but long jetty protruding into the Baltimore Harbor. The gale-force winds were close to sweeping M away, Wizard-of-Oz-style. M’s first words to our pilot, Dave, were “You’re not taking me up on that thing!” After a little discussion, we persuaded M that flying a helicopter in current conditions was perfectly safe (of course, it wasn’t exactly ideal conditions, quite the contrary, but there was too much at stake with all my planning!!).

    The Helicopter:

The flight was simply awesome (even if it was a little bumpy!). We started flying over the inner harbor and the city of Baltimore. We must have been about 50 feet from the top of the tallest building, an excellent bird’s eye view of the city.

We also flew over Camden Yards (famous baseball stadium) and the Ravens NFL stadium before heading back out via Baltimore Harbor. At this time it was sunset so we cruised above the Bay Bridge and took an awesome picture.

We then flew to Annapolis, past the Naval Academy and over Main Street, then buzzed the Navy Stadium where a game of lacrosse was being watched by a bunch of plebes in the stadium. After Annapolis we headed back out to the Bay and flew south along the western shore.

    Engagement Story: The Proposal

    [...read about the set-up]

    The Arrival

After flying via helicopter 40 minutes from Baltimore, M had no idea where we were about to land. We flew over the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay, and the helicopter finally landed at the rear of a gorgeous resort called the Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michael’s, Maryland.

Side Note: The Inn at Perry Cabin was featured in the movie Wedding Crashers starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. You may recall the Secretary of the Treasury (played by Christopher Walken) hosting a wedding reception for his daughter at a place on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where Owen Wilson uses his magical powers to deduce the content of each wedding gift. Or perhaps you remember the scene where Vince Vaughn heads to a private beach with Isla Fischer (!). This is the place.

As the helicopter made its approach, the hotel Concierge and a couple of bellboys were standing at attention, as if we were some kind of VIP (our pilot had called ahead to let them know we were about to land). Upon arrival we were greeted by our very flamboyant Concierge, then offered some complimentary Hors d’Oeuvres and a drink outside…

    The Proposal

The Concierge escorted us to a gazebo surrounded by several tiki torches on the front lawn of the hotel overlooking the Severn River. Inside the gazebo was a decorated love seat, a table with two silver domes, a single red rose, an ice bucket with an Australian Moscato wine from the Barossa Valley called “Brilliant Disguise”, and, of course, an inconspicuous box of tissues on the gazebo floor (the Concierge insisted on having a box of tissues nearby for the bride to be; it was blowing back and forth in the hurricane-force winds!). Given that the weather was chilly now that the sun had set, the Concierge decided to wrap M up in a blanket, which was very cute to say the least. After the Concierge opened the wine he disappeared into the surrounding darkness and we opened up dome number 1, which was a fruit and cheese spread. After a couple of bites, I reached for dome number 2, where the engagement ring was waiting. Not one for much formality, I slipped down from the loveseat on one knee and asked M to marry me. Thankfully, she said yes!!

We sat around for a few more minutes to take in the moment while laughing at the Concierge who kept appearing from the darkness to relight our tiki torches which kept blowing out by the strong wind. After retiring to a private room in the inn lobby to enjoy our wine, I shared some of the planning details behind the evening events, including the visit to the M’s parent’s house a few days earlier on April 1st (yes, April Fools Day) to ask for their eldest daughter’s hand in marriage…but that’s another story.

    The Dinner

We had a lovely dinner at the hotel restaurant - some of the best lamb shanks I’ve ever had and M selected the salmon - also outstanding. After dinner we were presented with an awesome chocolate cake I had especially selected for the occasion. On top was a love heart with the writing “Moo & Aussie.” In case you don’t know, those were our nicknames when we first met :)

    The Room

After dinner we were escorted by the Concierge to our room which was decorated throughout with tea lights, rose petals on the bed, flowers, and for a personal touch, several framed pictures of M and I over the years. If you look closely at the picture below you will see some of the photo frames on the mantel piece above the fireplace. I had selected photos of us doing our thing in Tahiti, Sydney, Brisbane, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Florida, and Malua Bay (we spend our Southern Hemisphere summers here at my parent's beach house in Australia).

    The Weekend

The weekend was spent leisurely exploring the town of St. Michaels. A cute little town with lots of places to eat and shop. Given that it was early spring, the crowds had not quite hit the town which made the weekend so much more pleasant. The places we would recommend should you ever visit St. Michaels include:
    • St. Michaels winery is a cute little winery with a limited selection of wine at reasonable prices. For $5 you can get a flight of 4 wines based on the same style e.g. dry, sweet, etc. We ended up buying a few bottles of the Gollywobbler white and red which are more like dessert wine.
    • Eastern Shore Brewing is an even smaller micro brewery located on the main street. Again, I opted for the flight and wasn’t overly impressed. The hefeweizen is ok, but the others were too hoppy for my taste.
    • Blue Crab Coffee is a little coffee shop serving espresso and small eats. Good place to get a quick coffee fix in the morning.
    • Ava’s Pizzeria & Wine Bar is a relatively new pizza place in St. Michaels, and supposedly a local favorite. We liked the pizzas. Apparently they have the biggest selection of beer in the area, so worth a visit!
    • Bistro St. Michaels was a great place to have a formal dinner outside the hotel restaurant. French cuisine with great food and service. Save room for the dessert!
    • Sherwood’s Landing is the main restaurant at the Inn at Perry Cabin. We ate here twice and the food was first class. It’s probably the best restaurant in town in terms of the view, especially if you can get a table by the window. It’s also the priciest but when in Rome…

While tasting some of the wines at the St. Michaels winery, we told our story to one of the employees, whom, with much excitement, retold the story of Michael Jackson flying into the Inn at Perry Cabin last year, in the same style we did. I don’t know if this is a good thing or bad thing, but we found it amusing!! The rest of the weekend – when we weren’t eating or drinking - was spent walking around the town, relaxing on the big white rocking chairs overlooking the river, and watching a couple of movies back in our suite. And yes, we watched the movie Wedding Crashers – at least just the scene which featured the hotel.

    The Return

On our final day we asked M’s parents to join us for the afternoon to celebrate the occasion over dinner. We took the opportunity to show them the resort and take a few more family pictures to hang on the walls. Here’s a picture of the four of us in the gazebo where I proposed.

And here’s a picture of Marty and I striking a pose reminiscent of a Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson scene in the movie Wedding Crashers (see the resemblance?).

After a quick stroll through the town of St. Michaels we came back to the resort for dinner at Sherwood’s Landing. With the aid of several servings of whipped cream, Marty helped us finish our cake before we hit the road back home to Washington DC.

Overall, a great weekend with the love of my life!

    We're Engaged!

We just got back from an amazing weekend in St. Michaels, Maryland. We're engaged! The location of the proposal was the Inn at Perry Cabin. More details to follow.
